Its that’s time of year again, although possibly a bit earlier than usual. Time to talk about my blog, and how I feel about it. Not great TBH, but its is getting better. I think I need a new hobby, and possibly a hug.
Real Life Issues
As I have alluded to repeatedly in past articles, to the point where I put the blog on hold for a bit, real life has been hitting my family hard. A family member has been diagnosed with cancer and this has played on my mind. It is treatable, but there has been a period of horrid uncertainty for the entire family unit. It was ten weeks before treatment actually began and diagnosis was nailed down, FFS. I didn't handle any of this especially well, and soon started to have problems with Autistic Burnout. The situation isn't about me obviously, and I'm being supportive as I can, but it's been hard. I'm trying not to repeatedly hit myself in the process. Positives? Well, obviously the career/social aspects have took a hit, but I took up jogging. That counts as a positive, right? Also I found a new sparring partner for 40k, which is good. And speaking of 40k...
Project Legs11
This has been broadly successful on the Ork side, but less so on the Marine. I had been concerned that I would burn through the Armageddon box in a matter of weeks, so I'm getting my money's worth on that front, although I must admit a slight decline in interest now the "shiny new toy" aspect has faded. It's a lot of infantry, and it is a slog. So much so I made another Battlewagon for a change of place. How much is this being effected by the family matter? Probably a fair whack, but also 11th ed has proved to be more revelatory than I expected. There's been more than I expected to do on the Ork side, while the metagame is so unstable I don't feel confident in writing about the actual game, at least at my pace. I'm not totally sure what I'm gonna do with the marines at this time, but I'm probably still gonna paint them. Because there's only so much I new stuff I can do with Orks without going seriously into Speed Freeks or Beast Snaggas. Which would be expensive, and perhaps unjustifiable given how much I actually play 40K. I could try armymen again, but I'm not liking the vibe just now, and that's probably not inexpensive either.
Transformers
There is slight irony here, because, at time of writing, I've been sitting on two articles about toys I enjoyed. And now I'm gonna tell you I've losing interest. Bloody hell, inconsistent or what? But then, the introduction of the Sureshot review likely gave that away. Or indeed the articles I've written in the past year. As a brand, I feel things are a bit stale given the G1 focus, the uncommitted/indifferent approach to other continuities, and an absence of creative flair. Maybe next year will give us something fresh, or at least interestingly bad. There’s been some interesting rumours. Or maybe it's just me; I've got a lot of robots, and I try not to buy things just because I want a treat any more. I still enjoy stuff like Bone Shaker, and I still intend to attend TFN. It's been a big part of my life for a long time, but I'm maybe gonna be taking a break soon.
Gunpla and other robot kits
Much like Transformers, my feelings here are being coloured by having too many robots and recent output not floating my boat. Bandai's recent run of GQuuuuuuX, the Seed sequel, and Hathaway 2 just haven't appealed to me that much. 30MM and especially Blokees have gotten very samey, while my recent dabble in mastergrade was a bust. And also I suppose going heavily into 40k makes doing other model kits less compelling; that creative need is being met.
The Blog
So, I suppose the pattern here is that I've got a stressful situation that I want to escape from, while my hobbies aren't quite appealing as much. I've been doing these for a long time too, so I'm maybe getting bored, had a bout of depression, or outgrown this stuff as a coping mechanism. So where does this leave the blog? Well, it's always nice to have a bit of structure, but I'm doubting the use of it. Here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna let the buffer empty, and see how I feel. The last article will probably be about TFN Swindon plus or minus a Christmas message or something. Then we'll see how I feel in the new year.
